Skateboarders
rolling toward goal
By Walt Reichert/Sentinel-News Editor
Organizers
of a skateboard park in Shelby County got a big jump start
Wednesday when Citizens Union Bank presented the group with a $10,000
challenge grant..
CUB is
challenging other banks and businesses to match the money that
will go toward building a skateboard part at the sit of the former bubble
pool
on Washington Street.
Organizer
Dee Maynard said the group needs $75,000 to build a good park
and $95,000 to build a great park. The county has applied for a $35,000
matching grant to help raise money for the project. An anonymous donor
has agreed to give the skateboarders $10,000 and Wal-Mart and
chiropractor Eric Ribenboim have made substantial contributions.
Maynard
said the group has raised more than $27,000 so far, not counting
CUB's challange grant.
The group
is giving presentations to businesses in the county hoping to raise
funds to open a park later this year or next year. They have also established
a website where citizens can monitor their progress, www.shelbycountyskatepark.com.
